The new school year has started and little ones are heading out to nursery or school. When YC and EC were really little and going to nursery, they had to find their name and then post it as part of their arrival routine. It was a fun way for them to start the day and for them to learn how to identify what their name looks like. BB never got the chance to do this, so during lock down we practiced his name with a name sensory tray.

Make sure you follow my English activity board on Pinterest for more ideas. Don’t forget to save the pin for later.

To make your own name sensory tray you will need:

  • Tray
  • Coloured rice
  • Paper
  • Pen
  • Letters

Write your child’s name on a piece of paper.

Fill a tray with coloured rice and letters. I used some wooden ones that come from an old Melissa and Doug set we have lying around.   Magnetic letters will work just as well.   To start with I only used letters that are found in BB’s name. As he gets better at his phonics I will start to add letters that don’t appear in his name.

Then let your little one find the letters in the tray and place them on top of the ones you have written on the piece of paper.

BB only did it couple of times before he moved onto something else, which is fine. This activity is only meant to be a short one. This is why I leave this sort of tray set up on the side in the playroom where there is easy access to it. That way he can come and go from it as he likes.
